Letter from the Editor

The first thing I want to say is that the 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff was a huge success.  We made over $35,000nt for the orphans of Taichung.  I would thank the Red Cross for volunteering to help, Grooveyard for organizing the music and Fubar, PJ’s Café, and Salut for the use of Soho Street.  Also I would like to thank the many bands that donated their time and money to the charity.  There was a great vibe on the street and we hope that next year will be bigger.

This month we are exploring the Taiwanese culture with relation to homosexuality.  Walking the streets of Taichung is hard to notice how invisible the gay culture is here.  This is a stark contrast to the west where it is becoming an open part of society.  We wanted to see Taichung and Taiwan through different eyes and then maybe we will have a greater understanding of how Chinese culture relates to homosexuality.

The day after one of our readers found out about the wine tasting article, she called and said she wanted to write an article about cocktails.  We think you will enjoy it and hopefully can mix up a party of your own.

We also have an article about Basic Aid.  It is a charity event coming up on May 19th to help some children in India.  Please read the article and let’s continue the flow of charity.  We are so well off here in Taichung.  If we can help some children get a better education in a place where quality education is a fantasy, then I think that is a worthy ideal.  For more info contact:  basicaid@hotmail.com.

I hope you enjoy this issue.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please feel free to email us at editor@thetaichungvoice.com.  Until next month, enjoy reading.

See you at Basic Aid,

Lance Carroll

Coming Soon

Coming up in June we have the health issue.  We are looking at Chinese medicine, Western medicine, homeopathy, and about anything else that constitutes as medicine in Taiwan.  If you are interested in the different forms of health care, then this issue is for you.

July we are doing the Planes, Trains, Automobiles, and Ships.  We are going to find out everything that you want to know about the different forms of transportation in Taiwan.  From the way we get around town to the way we travel around the world this issue will focus on everything.

August is our first annual Amazing Race issue.  The Taichung Voice, in association with others from the local community, is putting on an Amazing Race around central Taiwan with a stop over in Puli for a night.  If you are interested please contact us at: editor@thetaichungvoice.com.

I would like to mention that Our House Café is giving a Voice breakfast to anyone that submits a photo that we use on the picture page.  We want to include as many people in the local community in our picture page and for that to happen we need your help.

See you next month.
